Kokoro #001 - I Am BornThis image was shot on 6x9cm roll film. I knew I had a terrific image and couldn't wait to get into the darkroom to print it. In preparation for the next day's darkroom session, I laid out the film the night before. Something in the freshly-developed film must have smelled irresistible to my cat. During the middle of the night, she chewed a number of large holes in the film, ruining it. I was tempted to throw it away in anger, but instead — thankfully — tucked it away in the hopes that someday I might be able to repair it. Little did I know that Photoshop was less than a dozen years around the bend in my future and would be the perfect solution to fix the tooth-sized holes in my precious negative. In the late 1990s, I scanned the negative, did the necessary digital repair work, and salvaged this image.
The lesson is, I guess,
never throw anything away. You never know what the future might bring.
