Made of Steel
My Grandfather was known as “Two-Bit Johnny.” He found himself unemployed and with only two-bits in his pocket. He purchased two old car batteries from a junk yard, made one good battery and then sold it back to the junk yard for a profit. From him I learned to love metal shops and the men who work there.
In a ten year period, I visited and photographed dozens of shops all over America and the men who work with steel. The images and stories are glimpses into their world.
This is my largest project to date, consisting of two monograph editions of eighty images and a five separate folios of 11-12 image each. The project is divided into "chapters" that represent four ares of the country I visited and one special chapter devoted to Joe Sasak and his story. |
